The transformation of Anfield at ALSD

It was fantastic to see in-person conferences return this year with our first, the ALSD International, at Anfield at the beginning of September.

The event was held in our Main Stand, completed in 2016 for Liverpool FC, utilising the suite of premium hospitality spaces set up for over 200 delegates at the hybrid exhibition and conference event. The first day of the conference concluded with a tour of Anfield and Andy Hughes, Managing Director of Liverpool FC, kicked off day two with an overview of the club and recent developments.

Andy highlighted the club’s journey on and off the pitch, from their recent Premier League title to significant infrastructure improvements, including our state-of-the-art AXA Training Centre and opening the new Main Stand, taking Anfield to the next level. Andy summarised that, “Football is the priority but getting our football facilities right was also a critical priority” and that “it was highly complex delivering world-class sporting facilities in a unique and special building”.

The client and design team, including KSS Associate Director Debbie Power, presented the detail behind this ‘Transformation of Anfield’. Focusing on the commercial redevelopment of the Main Stand that began in 2012 to the future of the Anfield Road Stand, which secured planning this year and has recently started on site with completion due for 2023.

KSS Director Nick Marshall discussed ‘Stadiums of the Future’ and the current trends that influence design decisions such as sustainability. On the panel, Nick explained the issue with any new building is that construction is carbon hungry. Ideally, we should re-use and repurpose existing buildings even for stadiums as KSS have done at Anfield and propose to do at Selhurst Park and King Power Stadium.

Organised by the 30-year-old Association of Luxury Suite Directors (ALSD) in conjunction with Sports Venue Business (SVB), ALSD International is Europe’s one and only conference dedicated to the Premium, Club Seat and Hospitality sector and we are already looking forward to next year’s event.
