Ahmed Bin Ali Stadium in Doha, Qatar, home of Al Rayyan officially opened its doors with a match on December 18th marking exactly two years to the date of the 2022 FIFA World Cup Final.

The Amir Cup between Al Sadd and Al Arabi was the first official match at the new stadium, which is the fourth World Cup stadium to be completed ahead of next year’s tournament.

KSS worked in partnership with Pattern Design to deliver their stadium concept with Main Contractor Larsen & Tourbro. With a nett capacity of 40,000, the stadium will host seven World Cup fixtures, ranging from six Group Stage matches to one Last-16 match.

After the World Cup, the modular upper tier of the facility will be dismantled, and the seats will be handed over to other sports venues in Qatar and overseas. This procedure will reduce the stadium’s capacity to a more sustainable 20,000 seats, with cooling technology, for Al Rayyan FC in the Qatar Stars League and release the upper sections to deliver a wide range of community sports facilities.

Over 80% of the construction materials were reused or recycled from the deconstructed venue that once occupied this site. KSS Director Andy Simons said, “This was an excellent partnership with Dipesh’s team at Pattern, delivered to a demanding schedule and high BIM level and in good time for the warm-up events. I believe it is one of the most beautiful and considered stadiums of the World Cup programme.”

Everyone at KSS looks forward to the first World Cup match at the stadium on 21 November 2022.
